How Much Fertilizer Does My Lawn Need

Writer's picture: Wesley CohenWesley Cohen

In general, lawns need a lot of fertilizer to achieve that golf course look. First and foremost the turf needs a consistent amount of nitrogen fertilizer to produce

abundant growth and color throughout the growing season. Between three and four standard feedings is needed per year according to the University of MD Extension Service recommendations. But what about other nutrients? Good questions. There are a whole host of other nutrients out there such as phosphorous and potassium that are needed in varying amounts. The only way to know for sure what your lawn needs is to take a lab soil test and see. Most lawns will need small amounts of other nutrients and once they become fixed in the soil you're good. So in short the lawn needs an on going regiment of nitrogen and a good check up from time to time for other, secondary products, lime or sulfur included.
